Pay Attention to Your Heart

Earlier today, I heard a piece of news that immediately stirred something inside me. It didn’t sit well with my spirit. In fact, it bothered me more than I expected. My first instinct was to react—to speak, to explain, to defend my thoughts, maybe even to let my emotions take the lead.

But before I did anything, God’s Word quietly surfaced in my heart:

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
— Proverbs 4:23

That verse stopped me.

I realized that the real issue wasn’t the news itself, but what it was awakening inside me. Was it anger? Disappointment? Pride? Fear? If I reacted right away, whatever was filling my heart in that moment would surely spill out through my words and actions.

So instead of reacting, I paused.

I asked God to help me look inward—to pay close attention to my heart. And in that quiet moment, I understood something important: not every situation requires an immediate response, but every situation does require a guarded heart.

God gently reminded me that when my heart is unsettled, my reactions will be too. When my heart is aligned with Him, even difficult news can be met with grace, wisdom, and self-control. What flows out of me depends on what I allow to stay inside me.

Paying attention to my heart didn’t mean ignoring the issue or pretending it didn’t matter. It meant choosing not to let emotion override faith. It meant surrendering my feelings to God before surrendering my opinion to the world.

In a time when reacting quickly feels normal—posting, commenting, judging—God calls us to something deeper. He calls us to pause, to guard, and to examine our hearts. Because once our hearts are right, our words and actions will follow.

Today, I’m choosing to let God shape my response by first shaping my heart.

And maybe that’s a reminder we all need: before we react to what we hear, see, or feellet’s pay attention to our heart.
